Qualification Structure

To achieve this diploma, learners must complete a total of 40 credits, including:

Mandatory units: 20 credits

Optional units: 20 credits

Learner Entry Requirements

While there are no formal entry requirements, prior experience in management and a Level 4 qualification are recommended. Centers ensure that learners meet the requirements of age, ability, and assessment criteria.

Higher Apprenticeship in Management and Leadership

Level 6 Diploma in Management and Leadership

Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership

They can also progress within or enter employment in management and leadership roles.

Overview

The Focus Awards Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (RQF) is designed to equip you with the practical knowledge and understanding needed to excel in a teaching role. Whether you're a trainee teacher, have experience in a teaching role, or are currently in an assessing role and wish to progress, this qualification is for you. It provides a comprehensive understanding of delivering education and training, assessing learners, planning in education and training, using resources in the delivery of education and training, and understanding the roles and responsibilities within education and training.

Qualification Structure

To successfully achieve the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, learners must achieve 75 credits from 4 Mandatory Units and 45 from the Optional Units, totaling 120 credits. At least six credits must be at Level 5.

Entry Requirements

For learners who may need additional support, our centres are equipped to provide assistance. Learners should be competent in literacy and numeracy to help with elements of communication. This is at the discretion of the centre as they may decide to use diagnostic testing methods to ascertain how they can best support learners.

Minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy, and ICT. 

The minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy, and ICT details the knowledge, understanding, and personal skills in English, mathematics, and ICT expected of all teachers in the sector. The minimum core document comprises three sections:

Language and literacy

• Numeracy
• Information and communication technology (ICT)
• Each of these sections consists of two parts:
• Part A knowledge and understanding
• Part B personal skills

The teaching qualifications include knowledge, understanding, and personal skills requirements for literacy, language, numeracy, and ICT. Details can be found in the document 'Addressing Literacy, Language, Numeracy and ICT Needs in Education and Training: Defining the Teacher Education Programs.' (LLUK, 2007; updated LSIS, 2013). Elements of the minimum core should be selected appropriate to the context and needs of each cohort of trainee teachers. 

Mandatory Units and Personal Skills

The selected elements of the minimum core should be delivered and assessed across the following mandatory units:

• Teaching, learning, and assessment in education and training (Level 4)
• Developing teaching, learning, and assessment in education and training (Level 5)   

All trainee teachers joining the qualification program should undergo an initial assessment of their English, mathematics, and ICT skills. For those who have completed a Level 3 Award or Level 4 Certificate, their development needs and previous actions should inform opportunities for continued skill development. Opportunities to develop these personal skills should be available throughout the teacher education program. Teacher education teams should ensure that the developed personal skills are appropriate for the trainees' professional role.
